Tutoring #6 - Anh Tuan Le (1 hour)
On June 7th I met with Anh Tuan Le in person. As usual, I started the session with conversation practice as I asked him about his future plans for the weekend and corrected his use of the future tense. Anh Tuan Le wanted me to guide him as he completed a homework assignment that tested his writing skills. The assignment asked him to write a short story and specified that he needed to use a certain amount of specific compare and contrast, as well as cause-and-effect, transition words. First, I ensured that he understood the instructions then had him write the sentences. He was frequently confused about how to use the transition words. I would reassure him whenever he could not think of any sentences with the words. I would explain to him how to use the transition words with an in-depth explanation, and then ask him to create his own examples in order to check his comprehension. If he was incorrect I would explain the definition of the transition word again and then give real-world examples. I realized that he understood the definition of the transition words and their examples but would become uncertain when creating his own sentences for the assignment.
