Tutoring #5 - Dojun Kim (1 hour)

The first part of the session with Dojun Kim was conversation practice. After I asked him about what he would be doing that weekend he explained what his family would do to celebrate his daughter's birthday. He was going to buy bread and a cake from the Paris Baguette bakery. Only his wife, his daughter, and he were going to celebrate the birthday at home. However, at sc,hool they would be giving goodie bags to the other students. He had said that they would also sing her "Happy Birthday" and buy decorations for the house including a sign that said "Happy Birthday." I was surprised to learn about how similar modern celebrations of birthdays are to those in the United States. As we discussed the celebration of holidays in the United States and South Korea he told me that at weddings in South Korea, it is common for the guests to give money at a table before they enter. If people did not give a certain amount of money they are generally considered "stingy" people. New words that I explained to him included "goodie bag," "gift basket," "slice (of cake)," and "cheap/stingy." In my explanation of the words, I would try to include images when I could.
