Tutoring #4 - Dojun Kim (1 hour)

At the beginning of the meeting with Dojun Kim, he asked me about the tipping culture in the United States. I explained to him about tipping culture, why people tip, and what are the general customs when tipping. He explained to me how it does not occur in South Korea and that many find it confusing. During my explanation of tipping, I also explained to him new vocabulary words that I had used such as "tact" and "taboo." For the rest of the session, I tested his pronunciation and reading comprehension skills by having him read the first few pages of the first chapter of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. I would read every other paragraph. After every paragraph, I would check for any questions and then correct his pronunciation mistakes and define new vocabulary words before asking him comprehension questions. I realize that his conversation skills are very advanced despite his hesitations. I enjoy these conversations because I myself learn about a different culture and about their perspectives of certain American customs.
