Tutoring #13/14 - Fatima (2 hrs)
Today was my last in-person tutoring session with Fatima, so I wanted to make it a fun one! To start, Fatima and her presentation partner practiced their final presentation on social media, with me as their audience. They ran through the PowerPoint while I paused them for corrections on pronunciation and word choice, along with a few grammar corrections on their slides. They took a survey for their presentation, and one of the slides talked about the demographic of the survey, so I explained what this word meant, which was a little comical because we went back and forth a few times before it clicked! After working on their presentation for a while, her partner left and Fatima and I started our individual session. I had explained to her what a "gas station order" is (your go-to snacks and drinks when you're on a road trip and stop at the gas station), which is a very niche part of American culture that I figured she wouldn't know about. She initially thought I was talking about the actual gas that you put into your car, thinking you "order a certain type of gas" (LOL). Her reason for thinking this is because in Saudi Arabia, you give the money to the worker and they pump your gas for you, almost as if you "order it". I brought her flaming hot Cheetos, rolos, push pops, and Reese's peanut butter cups. She loved all of them except the Reese's - but 3/4 is pretty good! We talked all about different snacks in our culture and she even brought me Saudi Arabian coffee, which I didn't like, but loved that she wanted to share it with me!! A great last in person session with Fatima - someone I will truly never forget!
