TS #9 & #10 Sujin Yang

6/6/23

Hours: 2

Sujin and I met in the Union and reflected on our tutoring sessions. She said that it was very beneficial for her in terms of practicing her speaking skills as she doesn't have a lot of opportunity to speak English, she was also able to learn some low-frequency words and learned how to pronounce words that she had previously only ever written not spoken (some words we covered was agnostic, legitimate, competitive). We then talked a lot about the fashion industry, as her major was fashion and retailing. We talked a lot about "trends" and how consumers don't really know that what is trendy in the present was actually decided three years ago. Roughly, the industry decides on a trend, the World Color Union for example decides on a color, and three years later the trend hits the market. Basically, what's gonna be trendy in 2026 is already in the works now, and what's gonna be trendy in the next year was decided two years ago. This cycle is to ensure that they have sufficient time to make the appropriate designs, produce everything, and do the appropriate marketing for when it finally gets released.
