This past Friday I met with Maryna for almost three hours. We spent the whole time in conversation, which is the main skill which she wants to develop right now. She was explaining to me her experiences with travel, her daily routines and her interactions with her husband and relatives-in-law. I taught her some new phrases and colloquialisms, like the phrase "four-letter word". Apparently, this phrase is more uncommon than I had previously thought, since I had to teach this expression to my friends over the past week anyways! Maryna was telling me the cultural differences between Ukrainians and Americans when a car accident occurs. In Ukraine, both parties will yell curse words to one another, but then will calm down, exchange cash and move on like gentlemen. Maryna was telling me that here in the States, people will act nice at the scene and pretend that everything is okay, but then call a lawyer to litigate against you weeks after the fact. Maryna's experience in America confirms what Dr. Kim told us in class, which I was apparently wrong about, that Americans are much more indirect than most other cultures.
