Siena Failla CO #1 (May 2)
Date/Time: May 2nd/11-11:50
Topic/Skill: Low-Intermediate Reading: Main Idea
instructor: Ryan Flemming
In this class, the teacher was focusing on the main idea in short stories. He began the class by going over the specific objectives for the day and the assignments that are due for that week. The teacher focused on intrinsic motivation by emphasizing that the 3 readings the students are expected to complete out of class were not required, but encouraged. The teacher stressed that, even though they were not required assignments, he would be able to tell if the students were participating in the readings based on their overall improvement. The instructor did not begin class with instruction, but rather, had the students review and discuss the short story they were reading in class. He facilitated classroom engagement by asking students to direct their questions to their peers and work through new vocabulary together. Before describing methods that students could use to identify the main idea of the story, he asked the students what their initial impression of the main idea was through a series of multiple-choice questions. He only spent a few minutes on the instructional part of the lesson and had students put the methods he went over in class into practice immediately, applying the methods to the short story as a group activity. The class was very much focused on the students and encouraging them to work together to gain a better understanding of the reading. Since reading is usually a solitary activity, observing this class gave me a better understanding of how teachers can maximize student engagement while practicing this reading.
