Reading Class Observation

The class I observed today was a group two reading class focusing specifically on vocabulary. The first thing I noticed in this lesson was how the teacher spoke slower and with more simple language compared to the group 3 lesson I observed yesterday. The lesson started by reveiwing what the class did yesterday and then the instructor explained what they would be doing for the remainder of the class. In order to improve vocab, the students had to work together to find the meanings for words they were unsure of from the previous reading. During this time, the instructor took note of what words they could not explain and instead of just giving the definition, he searched the word on google images and the students found the meaning of the word through pictures. To introduce the next reading activity, the instructor told the students the topic of the article and had them share what things they previously knew. I saw this to be a good way to keep the class engaged with the topic. The closing activity was the students matching vocab terms from the article they read in class with a list of provided phrases.
