May 2, 2023 Class Observation with Dr. Angel Rios

On May 2nd, 2023 I observed Dr. Angel Rios as he taught a Reading course for English learners. Throughout the class I noticed that he was always very interactive with his students and always encouraged them. The readings in the course were based off of a textbook. He always had his students read the instructions and the reading passages in the textbook while correcting them with any words that they struggled to pronounce. As the students read the reading that was on the board, Dr. Rios highlighted key words or phrases that he would explain in more detail after the students read the passage. The subjects he focused on in the course were using articles and paraphrasing and summarizing. Throughout the course he would reiterate key phrases learned at the beginning of the course such as the importance of using one's own words when paraphrasing. While teaching he would keep the students engaged by reading a question from the textbook and then asking the students for the answer, after which he explains the answer in a more detailed manner. He would have students be further engaged in the course by asking them for synonyms and how to paraphrase certain sentences. When students were wrong he would explain why but then he would also encourage them.
