First Meeting with Khushi Patel
This evening I had my first meeting with Khushi Patel. She was delightful to meet. Like my first meeting with Maryna this past Saturday, most of the session was just spent in conversation getting to know each other. Khushi was telling me that the main skills she wanted to develop were conversation, grammar and listening comprehension. I asked her what particular kinds of issues she has encountered so far, and most of the constructive advice I gave her concerned idiomatic phrases. She showed me a list she kept on her phone detailing the new words learned in class, to which she added a few terms. The words I taught her include more standard words like "betrayal" as well as more colloquial terms Khushi will likely come in contact with on campus such as "cope and seethe" and "cap". We met at the Sweet Shop, where every square inch of wall is covered in graffiti. This gave us some opportunities to add to her list. In preparation for our next meeting on Monday I'll make a list of some common idioms, as well as the most common contractions in English. The colloquial contraction "outta" confused her. I think training her ear to register contractions like these will significantly boost her listening comprehension goals. Her command of basic vocabulary was very high with otherwise few grammar mistakes.
