 CIES Observation 1

Group 1 Grammar with Sana McHarek

I did not realize when I had initially signed up to observe this class that there was only one student. Still, it was interesting to observe nonetheless as Ms. Sana could devote all her attention to one student and give him one-on-one instruction. The day I observed, the focus was on adjectives and countable vs non-countable nouns. Ms. Sana first explained what these terms meant and how they functioned in a sentence, and then gave the student an activity relating to the lesson. She was very patient with him and was very encouraging even when he was incorrect or had difficulty. After each activity, she would ask him to brainstorm on a whiteboard a number of words that are adjectives and to think of countable and noncountable nouns, and to come up with sentences using each of them. It was also interesting to see how your native language can impede your English learning process, for example the student had a hard time pronouncing words with H's as his native language is french and it was interesting to see how he overcame it and worked hard on his pronunciation.
