This Monday I met with Khushi for reading practice. At the beginning I gave her a list of more common colloquial contractions to improve her speaking and listening skills. She was telling me about her upcoming speaking project in class. I asked her if she was intimidated, and she said that once the date of her presentation arrives, she will be ready for it. To practice some new vocabulary with her, I had her read aloud the first two pages of The Righteous Mind by Jonathan Haidt. Overall, she did a good job reading the text. She told me that she had difficulty pronouncing the difference between the English "v" and "w" sounds. She also underlined about five or six new vocabulary words which she learned from the book and and added to the word list which she keeps. For the next session, she suggested an activity where I bring her pictures for her to describe according to a prompt which I can provide her. Hopefully such an exercise can help prepare her for the speaking project which she was telling me about. Even as a native speaker, speaking in front of an audience, even with notes, is still challenging and presents difficulties with maintaining focus clarity.
